There are many aspects to the theme "Exhibitions" many of which fall into the category of "Cinderellas" but they are all covered by the activities of the Belgian Study Circle.

The first Belgian commemorative stamps were issued in support of the International Exposition at Antwerp in 1894. |

The fist exhibition set was swiftly followed in 1896 by the issue supporting the International Brussels Exposition. |

Around the turn of the 19th Century the collection of these poster stamps, vignettes or labels, call them what you will, was probably more popular in Belgium than the collection of postage stamps.

This postcard for the Brussels International Exhibition has it all! A desirable postal stationery cards with additional franking. The stamps are franked with the machine applied slogan cancellation promoting the exhibition. This type of cancellation is sometimes known as a "Flag" or "Flamme". A poster stamp is also applied cancelled at the exhibition with the exhibition cancellation. |
